The Weezer Billboard Saga

A mysterious “WEEZER” billboard went up in Salt Lake City that caught the attention of many. Local citizens wondered what purpose the billboard went up. Billboards are nothing new to Utahns, especially promoting events like concerts, but Weezer wasn’t slated to return to Salt Lake. Posted by local entrepreneur Cory, it was inspired by one of their own t-shirt designs and they used the last of their company marketing budget on the board.

With the help of Reagan Outdoor, Weezer responded. “Thanks to whoever bought the billboard down the road. -Weezer” reads the response, a simple thank you for the shoutout.

Since then, the billboards have garnered dozens of news articles, tv segments and tons of social media coverage. The initial post has over 61 thousand views, but the response from Weezer has gotten over 2 million views on one post and over 2.5 million across 5 posts.

 

All of these earned views are on top of the normal impressions earned from the billboards. This shows how engaging, good campaigns not only earn the incredible value from regular impressions, but have huge potential to earn extra media attention.
